130T Crane Proof Load Test

We recently completed a successful proof load test on a 130-tonne overhead crane in regional New South Wales. Our client engaged us to supply all required load testing equipment, along with one of our experienced technicians to work alongside crane engineers and site representatives. The proof load test marked the final step in the installation and commissioning of the new crane.

The test was carried out using a combination of water load bags and steel test weights. Due to limited headroom—from the hook to the floor—we rigged a 10.5t stack of steel weights below the water load bags. Calibrated tension cells took readings, accurately measured the applied loads and were used to set the crane scales.

Crane engineers performed all necessary static and dynamic testing criteria. Once complete and approved, the water—sourced from the site’s storage facility—was drained and returned to the holding dam.

Water load bags are an ideal solution for crane load testing where a water source is available. For this project, a single rigid tray truck was all that was required to transport everything to site. In contrast, using full steel weights would have required the equivalent of seven semi-trailer loads – highlighting the financial and environmental advantages of using water as test weight.
